PRODUCTION DESIGN
The Concept
The narrative developed as a concept that followed the revelation of a creature - representation of freedom of individuality - from the cage - the body - within which it was withheld.
This concept was developed on the basis of conveying it through a dance performance.
Location
The initial choice of location was that of an abandoned and derelict building to represent the feeling the creature held towards the outer world, which wasn't considered as their own, foreign and uncomfortable.
As the project developed, the concept would be represented through the character of a dancer unexpectedly deliberating themselves during a dance and as the concept changed from a creature revealing itself from a human body, the location changed from that of the abandoned building to an isolated and private studio.
Visual Themes
From the start of the project, mythological themes were referred to for conceptual and visual inspiration, that followed with the idea of a mythical creature being the true self of the dancer.
Change from use of coloured powder in the abandoned building as an expression of her deliverance, to use of UV light and paint in the studio, allowing to develop the possibility and create interesting effects contrasting between the dark and low-light surrounding of the location and vibrant colour use from the mythological theme.
When the dancer is being herself, the mythical creature is revealed through lights, colours and patterns to represent the mystical and uncommon.
Costume development
For the initial concept of the character being a creature, concept of structure of wings and their design was developed and then created as a prop to be a part of the costume.
Initial costume design concept for the dancer consisted of a natural white, cream coloured dress with a tree design in pearls to achieve slight reflection of the light allowing to see the design.
The see-through white, cream coloured fabric use for a light and flowing effect, allowing it to follow the dancer's movements.
It was then decided that the tree design would be more visible in UV light, painted on with blacklight paint to allow the design to be more vibrantly perceivable.
